Senior Data Engineer
We keep hiring more Manfredites for Joko!
Can you imagine online shopping being as simple as whispering Alohomora to unlock exactly what you need at the best price without wasting half your life comparing tabs?
Well, that is precisely what the team at Joko is building: the new entryway to AI-powered smart shopping. This Paris-founded scale-up and certified B Corp already empowers over 7 million users across Europe and is now landing with full force in the US.
To sustain this growth, they are looking for a Senior Data Engineer with crystal-clear communication and endless curiosity. If you believe the future of shopping is still being written... just keep reading!
What will you do?
Before diving in...a bit of context
Joko was born in Xavier’s living room, but it wasn’t just any ordinary living room: that was the birthplace of an idea designed to change online shopping forever. Three friends (Xavier, Alexandre, and Nicolas) joined forces back in 2018 driven by a single obsession: making online shopping easy, efficient, and free from the hassle of losing half your life hopping from tab to tab.
They brought heavy backpacks filled with experience: Xavier had led a travel portal at Jumia (Africa's largest e-commerce platform), Alexandre came from building scalable technology at Criteo, and Nicolas had a solid background in demanding sectors like banking. Safe to say, they are deeply knowledgeable industry insiders who truly know their stuff.
During their years in e-commerce, they realized that the online buying process still had more friction than an episode of Succession. So, they decided to create a platform that would help people make smarter purchasing decisions, save a few bucks, and do it all using cutting-edge technology and data as their guiding star.
Here's how Xavier, CEO and co-founder, tells it himself:
Today, Joko is a certified B Corp helping over 7 million users save money at more than 50,000 stores. And they’re just getting started. They’re expanding fast in the US, and their actual big quest is building Juno, an AI-powered shopping assistant that knows what you want, recommends products with real intelligence, and helps you save money without breaking a sweat.
Also, they launched Juno just now, look at here!
Joko products not only offer automatic cashback but also automatic coupons, price drop alerts, carbon footprint tracking, and even a buy now, pay later system.
But what we really love about Joko — and we say this with a full heart and full mouth — is the way they work: radical transparency, open access to information (yes, even board presentations), real trust in the team, and a principle we adore: “Culture is the product we build for our people.”
Don’t just take our word for it 😉 — check out their vision on tech and product and see for yourself.
So… what will I be doing day-to-day?
Well then, Manfredite, you’ll be part of a highly versatile technical team with a product mindset and zero fear of taking on whatever challenge comes their way. For all of this to run smoothly, the Operations department relies on a data team led by Coralie (Data Lead), whose mission is to bring order to mountains of information and build rock-solid foundations for the entire company.
The real challenge lies in scaling the data infrastructure to digest a volume of information that just keeps growing. In your day-to-day, you will work hand-in-hand with Data Analysts, Product Managers, and the Engineering team designing ingestion pipelines, optimizing transformations in dbt, and building the technical architecture that will feed new AI features—all while guaranteeing data quality, observability, and security with total autonomy.
Your evolution

In 1 month
You’ll start with an intensive onboarding (with a high probability of being in person in Paris or Barcelona), where you’ll get fully up to speed on the product, the teams, and Joko’s culture.
You’ll have a ton of initial sessions to understand how everything works internally—from gift cards to Juno, their new AI assistant.
And yes, you’ll also have plenty of "virtual coffees" to get to know your new team.
Your responsibilities
Scale the data infrastructure: Lead the evolution of Joko’s technical stack to make it more scalable, reliable, and cost-efficient, anticipating growth in data volume and complexity to design systems with performance always in mind.
Power AI initiatives: Lay down rock-solid data engineering foundations that enable the deployment and fueling of AI-driven data products used by stakeholders across the entire company.
Design and maintain data pipelines: Build robust processes to ingest data from multiple sources (internal systems, APIs, external tools) and orchestrate them efficiently.
Unlock scalable data modeling: Support Data Analysts by improving dbt project organization, factorizing jobs, and ensuring quality and scalability of transformations across the stack.
Ensure data quality & observability: Implement monitoring, testing, and alerting systems to ensure the freshness, reliability, and accuracy of data across the company.
Manage data access & governance: Define and enforce access control policies (e.g., in Snowflake, Metabase) to ensure data is secure, well-permissioned, and compliant.
Implement documentation & knowledge sharing: Ensure models, pipelines, and workflows are well-documented to support onboarding, collaboration, and long-term autonomy of the team.
Tackle exciting challenges ahead: Support new market launches, manage growing data volumes, and help centralize pipelines within an orchestration tool.
How will you do it?
At Joko, no two days are the same either.
They usually work in task forces—multidisciplinary teams formed around specific quarterly challenges—without traditional sprints, without useless meetings, and with a relentless focus on what truly brings value. Tasks are prioritized alongside product and data leaders, and you'll have total autonomy to pick up the next initiative, pull from logic, creativity, and collaboration, and push it across the finish line.
Although at Joko they are completely agnostic regarding your previous stack (if you master data architecture, the transition will be smooth sailing), their current ecosystem is finely tuned to extract maximum power from the Modern Data Stack: they run their data models with dbt, handle massive storage with Snowflake, perform ingestion via Airbyte, and drive business intelligence through Metabase. For orchestration and advanced development, Python and SQL are their daily bread, seamlessly integrated across the AWS environment.
Writing code is always done with care and affection: there is a deep culture of testing, demanding yet constructive code reviews, shared technical decisions, and an obsession with keeping documentation up to date. Every two days they hold a brief sync to unblock any roadblocks, and every three weeks they enjoy a cooldown: time set aside for you to choose where to invest your energy—whether that’s exploring new Artificial Intelligence tools, optimizing transformations, or experimenting with your own data ideas that could impact the product and business.
And if you thought this was about quietly crunching queries in a dark corner → nope 🙂↔️. Communication is paramount: they talk, write, and reason things out thoroughly as a team. A strong written culture is embedded everywhere, and clear, empathetic communication is key—because the best data platforms aren't built by algorithms, they're built by people.
When will you work?
Joko doesn’t believe in clocking in, or in forcing early wake-up calls just for show. Here, everyone manages their own schedule in the way that works best for them — because when you're treated like an adult, you act like one. There are no fixed hours or daily meetings that could’ve been a sticky note: just syncs every other day, focused time for deep work, and actual breathing room to think.
You can even work remotely from abroad for up to 3 months a year if you feel like switching up the view (and the time zone). Just make sure you’ve got a solid internet connection, a good mood, and the drive to make an impact. The rest… you build it your way.

FlexibleWhere will you work?
Remote
This position is 100% remote from Spain.
From time to time, there will be team meetings or events in Paris or Barcelona, and they’d love for you to drop by without having to tame logistical dragons.
Now, if you happen to live in Barcelona, you’ll be super close to their coworking space near Urquinaona and can stop by whenever you fancy: to see friendly faces, bounce ideas around, or simply steal a few branded pens.
Who will you work with?
Never alone... because you won't be the only person with the Manfred seal on board! 🖖
You’ll be joining Joko’s Data Team, which sits inside the Operations department. It’s a highly skilled crew of about 8 people made up of Senior profiles with backgrounds as diverse as they are solid—ranging from folks with a heavy software engineering background to experts in analytics and data science.
In your day-to-day, you’ll work very closely with Coralie, Joko’s Data Lead. Coralie has been with the company for almost six years, was the very first data hire, and built the early foundation of their current stack using Snowflake and dbt. She knows every nook and cranny of the system and leads through trust, engineering best practices, and knowledge sharing. The team reports directly to the company’s COO and collaborates tightly with the CTO, Software Engineering teams, and Product Managers.
And even though the crew is scattered across Paris and Barcelona, the collaborative culture is so seamless that it'll feel like your teammates are sitting at the desk right next to yours.
What are they asking for?
We are going to prioritize profiles who:
- Have 5+ years of prior experience in data engineering (or similar roles) building and scaling data infrastructures in production, especially if it has been in B2C product startups or scale-ups handling millions of recurring users.
- Have a proven track record scaling a Modern Data Stack, for instance with tools like Snowflake, dbt, Airbyte, orchestrators like Airflow. And an impeccable technical mastery of SQL and Python.
- Know how to solve complex problems and can tell us about it. They must have impeccable technical storytelling: explaining what you do well is not optional, it is part of the job.
- Have a keen eye for writing elegant and maintainable code.
Joko is looking for people who want to make a real impact, not just tick boxes or complete tasks.
They highly value diversity: their team is made up of profiles with very different backgrounds (entrepreneurs, engineers, PhDs, people with machine learning or AI expertise...) who are not afraid to tackle any challenge that comes their way.
If you happen to come from a Software Engineer background and made the jump into data, they will love it, as you'll bring that architectural rigor and code-review culture they appreciate so much.
Additionally, this is what will make a difference:
- Bilingual level of English.
- A genuine interest in AI and habitual use of Artificial Intelligence tools in your day-to-day workflow.
- Clear, humble, and positive communication: if you drain the room like a Dementor, this is not the place for you.
- Curiosity about the product, the company, and its mission.
And if on top of that, you bring an ownership mindset, enjoy learning from others, and are eager to get your hands dirty in decision-making, you will likely fit like a glove.
