Abogaaaaado? Don't pronounce it the way Robert De Niro did in the film Cape Fear, because Law Business Research is a product company born in 1996 to answer legal questions using information, data, and AI-supported tools. One of its flagship products is Lexology, which has over 880,000 registered users who rely on it for updates.

As a data scientist, you will be part of a self-sufficient, multidisciplinary team working to improve their machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) systems. Interested? Read on!

What will you do?

🧪 Since we know you love data, here's some information about Law Business Research. It is an information services company that uses technology to provide the global legal industry with intelligence, analytics and performance data.

They have achieved rapid year-on-year growth for over 25 years, thanks to an international team of over 600 professionals. This has enabled them to evolve from a traditional legal publisher into a technology-driven information provider. Their aim is to inform, engage and connect legal professionals. They drive professional development, optimise research and manage risk in global legal markets, including intellectual property.

Can you tell me more about their tools? Let's get to it...

  • Lexology is the world's leading legal intelligence platform for mitigating risk, staying on top of change, and finding expert advice. It is based on insights, forward-looking analysis, and expert guidance from the world's top law firms. The platform allows you to search by topic, firm or sector.
  • Specialised platforms: eight platforms with specialised legal content on various topics, providing decision support for clients.

They have always been committed to creating a positive and inclusive workplace for all. They create equal opportunities for their candidates, regardless of sex, gender orientation, marital status, nationality, religion, age or disability. This commitment has been recognised in the 2024 'Inspiring Workplaces' awards.

You will be pleased to know that they take their place in society very seriously by participating in community and charitable initiatives. For example, they work with the Swawou School in Sierra Leone, providing education for 120 girls and covering the costs of their schooling.

They have offices in five cities: London, Hong Kong, New York, Washington and Austin. Now, you can be part of their new headquarters in Barcelona!

🫵🏻 What is your role in all this?

Your main mission will be to enhance their machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) systems, with a particular focus on the tagging team. In other words, you will help teach their machines to understand and classify complex texts, identify entities, and extract relationships and key information. Your work will have a direct impact as you will improve their datasets, making search, recommendation and information retrieval functions so intelligent that they seem like magic.

You will journey from initial exploration and building innovative prototypes to evaluating models and defining long-term work streams, always according to the team's priorities.

So if you're excited by challenges and see yourself helping to shape the next generation of data-driven products from the ground up, this is the place for you!

Your evolution

Law Business Research
Your day ZERO

In 1 month

You will have completed your onboarding, probably in person at their Barcelona coworking space, where Marc will support you in getting to know the company and its tools, and help you to immerse yourself in their technical roadmap.

You will have met with HR and the technical team, investigated the organisational chart, and configured the internal management tools.

Your responsibilities

  • You will write production-ready Python code, with the support of the team's developers.

  • You will actively support and assist your team members.

  • You will actively experiment with new Machine Learning models to find the best solutions.

  • You will ensure the quality, fairness and safety of the AI models and components you develop.

  • You will maintain data science related product service levels for the products under your responsibility.

  • You will stay up to date with the latest technologies and trends in the sector.

  • You will explore the potential of AI technologies to solve product-related issues, explaining them in a clear way to people with different profiles.

  • You will have proactive communication with stakeholders to align objectives and results.

How will you do it?

You will join a multidisciplinary team working to improve ML/NLP systems. In other words, you will focus on their tagging, labelling and information extraction systems. You will work with data and AI pipelines using technologies such as MLFlow and Hugging Face to build models that will improve and tag their data platform.

Collaboration and finding joint solutions is a priority here, so you will have the opportunity to bring your ideas to life and contribute to new projects.

All company communications are conducted in English, so be prepared to refine your speaking skills!

The company works with the Agile methodology. Initially, you will participate daily with the entire technical team, and later, with well-defined responsibilities, you will be able to work autonomously, or with the direct team or in pair programming if the occasion requires it. You will also have the opportunity to participate in the occasional call with Marc, the main developer in Barcelona, or with stakeholders, to clarify requirements and address any queries.

Regarding internal tools, they use GIT for version control and Confluence for documentation, as well as Jira and Trello. Those who prefer Microsoft use Visual Studio Pro; for their infrastructure, they use Azure and Azure DevOps for CI/CD, as well as an Elasticsearch search server.

For daily communication, you will use Teams for messages and video calls with the team.

When will you work?

Their flexible schedule allows each team member to organise their time in the best possible way, while maintaining a focus on results and personal well-being.

Of course, with great power comes great responsibility, as Spider-Man was told, so there will be certain core hours when you will need to be present to coincide with the rest of the team.
