What are they looking for?🧐

As a frontend developer at Empathy, you'll be right at the heart of creating and refining user interfaces for their research platform. Working closely with the product design team, you'll bring Figma designs to life, making sure they not only look fantastic but also work seamlessly. Your input will be crucial because you'll be the one identifying any design challenges and coming up with practical solutions to keep things running smoothly.

In 1 month

During the first week, you'll be introduced to the team members and given an overview of the purpose and components of the system. You'll dive into the architecture of the code and explain how everything works, followed by an introduction to their code review and check-in process. The team will provide an overview of the market research industry and explain the problem they're addressing. 

In the second week, you'll discuss the product roadmap to showcase the exciting future ahead. 

They'll provide guidance and support as needed, ensuring everything is recorded for future reference and at a pace that suits your learning style.

Your responsibilities

  • Implementing New Features across various products, including mobile apps, desktop portals, and administrative portals.

  • Translate designs into responsive web pages. Participating in Product Design Process, providing input and feedback to help identify potential development bottlenecks early on.

  • Addressing and fixing bugs. While it may not be the most enjoyable task, it's crucial for maintaining product quality and ensuring a smooth user experience.

How will you do it?

You'll work closely with the project founders. Here you won't find big bureaucracies or complicated procedures. Communication is open and participatory ; you'll be able to contribute your ideas and proposals regarding anything that involves improving the product they're working on.

Operating in an agile environment, the team utilizes Kanban for task management, GitHub for code integration, and MS Teams for communication.

You'll enjoy a high degree of autonomy, taking ownership of your processes. Collective effort drives backlog prioritization and delivery planning, ensuring successful outcomes.

When will you work?

At Empathy, the team enjoys the sweet flexibility of working hours ⏰

The only little ask? They just ask everyone to be around during a specific time slot for some team magic—you know, daily meetings to chat about decisions and all the good stuff! It is usually around 10am-2pm Spanish time, but nothing is written in stone.

Empathy is 100% REMOTE company. 

The headquarters are in Ireland. However, they want their product team based in Spain. 

They strongly believe in the benefits of remote work and work-life balance, allowing you to work from anywhere within Spain.

Who will you work with?

New staff will be added, but to date the team consists of 4 people

  • Iván Soriano (Frontend Lead): Ivan is the head of front-end development with 15 years software development experience. He was deploying angular systems to production environments when it was still fresh to the market! He has experience in designing and architecting complex front-end systems including monoliths and micro front-end designs. You’ll be working closely with Ivan to make sure our applications have the most amazing experience in our domain!
  • Gary Walsh (CTO): Gary has more than 15 years experience in software development and architecture. In a previous life he was responsible for designing and implementing large scale systems for Governments around the world as well as designing complex safety systems in the Aviation regulatory industry. He’ll be doing most of the back end development that you will be asked to bring to life through on the apps and portals.
  • Juarez Filho (Product Designer): Juarez is our product designer and UI/UX creative genius. He has been designing creative and beautiful user experiences for over 5 years having previously been a front-end developer himself. He will be creating the products in Figma and you’ll be asked to bring his imagination to life.
  • Declan O’Reilly (Managing Director): Declan is the managing director and owner of Empathy. He has been involved in the research industry for nearly 20 years. He is the driving force of the organization and works on the client consulting side as well as with us on the software development side of the business.

What are they asking for?

One deal-breaker is that you must be able to communicate in English language in order to join the team. You don't need to be Shakespeare.. but you need at least communicative level.

As for the technical requirements for this position, here they are:

  • Front-end web development experience preferrable in a design driven environment 
  • Strong knowledge of Angular -Experience with other front-end technologies e.g. React will be considered-
  • Strong knowledge of CSS 
  • Knowledge of responsive web design principles 
  • Experience with Git and GitHub 
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills 

Extra points:

  • Experience with Ionic is a positive  
  • Since they have the backend in .Net, knowledge of C# is a bonus… but not essential!

What the FAQ?

You are only eligible for this position if you are living in Spain.

  1. There'll be a cultural fit meeting with Gary and Declan (in English), so you can get to know each other.
  2. The second phase is a technical talk with Iván (in Spanish) and an overwiew of the technical challenge that will be sent to you (not very long!).
  3. A final formal interview (in English) with the team to discuss your technical challenge submission, your experience to-date and what you will bring to the role.

It is 100% remote from Spain! They will arrange a meetup once/twice a year to do some team bonding and celebrating but outside that they want you comfortable and coding wherever that may be.
